On Feb. 9, the St. Luke’s community poured into the SoNo Ice House for the second annual St. Luke’s Teddy Bear Toss. Held during the Storm varsity hockey game against Wilbraham & Monson Academy, this event celebrated the life of Teddy Balkind and was inspired by the Balkinds’ wish that memories of Teddy and his playful spirit inspire smiles.

Prior to the game, Head of School Dr. Mary Halpin Carter and Athletic Director Anna Knechtel spoke briefly about Teddy.

“Those who knew Teddy best will tell you that he loved hockey,” Carter said during her remarks.“He loved his team and his coaches. He loved competing. Tonight, we remember the exuberance and pure joy Teddy brought to this game, to his friends, his teachers, his mountain biking, and just about everything he did.”

We are so grateful to our St. Luke’s community for packing the rink and bringing hundreds of teddy bears with them to toss onto the ice between the second and third periods. The St. Luke's girls & middle school hockey teams, the Mid-Fairfield Mites, and the boys varsity players collected the bears, which were then donated to Filling in the Blanks
